How to come up with ideas

The process of creating the cover for my latest illustrated story

Hi friends,

I can finally say out loud that I have illustrated a book! Well, it’s not a standard book, but more of a magazine with book qualities. What I loved most about this project was the story. I fell in love from the very first words: French countryside, 1800s and flowers. You can already tell that they fit my artistic style perfectly! The downside was the fact that I only had one month to do all the illustrations (I think this is a common downside when working with magazines). First, I created the story board and all the finished drawings for the story, then I focused on the cover. This was the main struggle for me in this project, which is why I want to talk about it here.

So, when it comes to the cover, you have to figure out on your own what details and part of the story you want to reveal to the reader. There is no text to guide you in this decision, so you probably want to come up with more than one sketch. An important aspect is the emotional one: what feeling do you want the reader to have when seeing the cover? Do you want them to be amused, frightened, or nostalgic? In my case, the story would suggest me to go for a gentle, romantic atmosphere. This will also influence the color palette: a dark scene with harsh shadows would suggest mistery, while pastel, light colors and soft shadows are more appropriate for a quiet scene. So with all these aspects in mind, I couldn’t decide whether to represent a part of the story or create something more abstract. In the end, I opted for the main character doing her thing, aka composing silk blue poppies.

I sent these 3 thumbnails to the art director and asked his opinion. He told me that the third one would be more suitable because it better represents the romantic feeling of the story, and I absolutely agreed.

Ciao amici,

finalmente posso dirlo ad alta voce: Ho illustrato un libro! Beh, non si tratta di un libro comune, ma più di una rivista con le qualità di un libro. Ciò che ho amato di più di questo progetto è stata la storia. Mi sono innamorata fin dalle prime parole: campagna francese, periodo 1800 e fiori come “protagonisti. Si può già dire che tutto ciò si adatta perfettamente al mio stile artistico! L'aspetto negativo è stato il fatto di avere solo un mese di tempo per realizzare tutte le illustrazioni (credo che questo sia un aspetto negativo standard quando si lavora nel mondo delle riviste). Prima, ho creato lo story board e tutti i disegni finiti per la storia, poi mi sono concentrata sulla copertina. Questa è stata per me la difficoltà principale in questo progetto, ed è per questo che voglio parlartene qui.

Quando si tratta della copertina, bisogna capire da sé quali sono i dettagli e le parti della storia che si vogliono rivelare al lettore. Non c'è un testo che ti guidi in questa decisione, per cui è probabile che tu voglia realizzare e proporre più di uno schizzo. Un aspetto importante è quello emotivo: quale sensazione vuoi che il lettore provi vedendo la copertina? Vuoi che sia divertito, spaventato o nostalgico? Nel mio caso, la storia mi suggeriva un'atmosfera dolce e romantica. Questo influenzerà anche la tavolozza dei colori: una scena scura con luci e ombre nette suggerirebbe mistero, mentre colori chiari e ombre morbide sono più adatti ad un’atmosfera calma e serena. Con tutti questi aspetti in mente, non riuscivo a decidere se rappresentare una parte della storia o creare qualcosa di più astratto. Alla fine ho optato per la protagonista che svolge la sua attività di composizione di papaveri blu di seta.

Ho inviato queste tre miniature al direttore artistico e ho chiesto la sua opinione. Mi ha detto che la terza sarebbe stata più adatta perché rappresentava al meglio l’atmosfera romantica della storia, e io non potevo che essere d'accordo.
