ARTvent Calendar 2022 (1-12)
The first finished prompts and my thoughts and struggles encountered these days
Here I am with my first 12 finished themes of my ARTvent Calendar. At first glance it may seem like there was a lot of consistency and inspiration, but that was not the case at all. The first few days, as with any new challenge, I was very enthusiastic and it seemed easy to find just 30 minutes to draw and paint. For the first prompts I didn’t even look for references, but starting with the robin (day 6) some famous excuses arose. The lack of inspiration combined with the holidays (in Italy we celebrate December 8th) and a nice visit from some of my relatives prevented me from opening the sketchbook for several days… Last night, however, I decided to recover the past prompts and catch up with the calendar.
I think consistency is as difficult to achieve as it is crucial to have. Many say that passion is enough to have consistency, but that’s not really the case. Passion can be strong some days and less on others, but it’s not enough to improve. I’ve been thinking a lot about what undermines my consistency. Performance anxiety, fear of disappointing myself, continuous comparison with others and the thought of not having enough time, are all things that live in the unconscious and can’t wait to resurface at every good opportunity. Can we eliminate these negative thoughts? In my opinion, we can’t. We can only accept them and try to fight them by taking initiative and not letting ourselves be overwhelmed. In this specific case, the delay led me to think I’d already failed, but it’s never too late to catch up. So I’ve learned to no longer look at wasted time, but at what I can do in the present moment.
Now I want to share a couple of tips regarding the art process for the calendar prompts:
• keep the art tools ready on the table and use the same brushes and colors (you want to save time for painting)
• draw in a small box instead of a full blank sheet
• give yourself a time limit, 30/40 minutes should be enough
• you can search for references, but be careful not to fall into the Pinterest trap, it may take longer than necessary (rather search for photos on google).
My favorite themes are those of day 3, 6 and 9. What are yours?
Possiamo eliminare questi pensieri negativi? Secondo me no, possiamo solo accettarli e cercare di combatterli prendendo iniziativa e non lasciandosi sopraffare.
